I've been to the Keys a couple of times before, but always flew in directly. Not this time. Tonight, I'm flying into Fort Lauderdale, spending the night, and then making the drive down to the Keys. I feel like I should cross Seven Mile Bridge once in my life. Anyone here done it?

I haven't done it but my cousin just moved to Key West last month and whenever I go to visit her I plan on doing this. It just seems too cool to pass up.

Enjoy!

My boyfriend has done it a couple of times - it's supposed to be a nice drive. It's something very unique! Enjoy :) Bring sunglasses.

I rode my bicycle from Key Largo to Key West and back one time on a vacation. So yeah, I guess you can say I have done it!

Fun drive, pretty great sights. Just be mindful of the speed limit and other traffic (that loves to go well below said speed limit). There are some dashed yellow portions, but not much room with oncoming traffic so plan your overtakes carefully and execute them swiftly. Enjoy!

Damn, isn't that over 100 miles?

I've made that drive twice. Great view, but slow and tedious especially if there's traffic. It took me over 3 hours just to get from Miami to Key West. I've also flown myself there twice which is by far the best way to get there.

Just did it a few weeks ago. Two lanes is kind of frustrating when the speed limit is 55 and (exactly at the island you posted) traffic slows to a crawl because people are gawking. Of course traffic is coming the opposite direction not allowing you to pass. You want to see the island, get off the highway and go look at it.

Also, it didn't seem that long going south, but north seemed longer even though there wasn't as much traffic.

some of those bridges suck because they arent flat though, beyond that such a great time. Went with like 12 people and a support van

It's definitely worth driving. Just remember to watch your speed, especially on the islands where the speed can drop from 55 to 30 without much notice from the cop waiting just inside the 30 zone.

Also I'd recommend you leave early, as traffic can come to a standstill and leave you with less time than you wanted in Key West.

If you're in the mood for some amazing pizza when you get there, Onlywood is the place to go. http://www.onlywoodkw.com/

Anybody know what the time record is for The Overseas Highway? We need to keep track of this.

Jagvar, you're up first. I'm going to guess you can do it in about 70 minutes.

Just made the trip a week ago. Love it, but the long stretches of single-lane road can make the trip a little tiring. Good thing there are numerous establishments that serve cold refreshments on most of the keys to make it tolerable (Alabama Jacks, Smuggler's Cove, Hogfish, etc...).

I have been on there several times in my life but never actually driven it myself. All I can say is what I've heard: watch your speed and try to go at a time that avoids traffic.

Yes, when I got tired of flying into Key West with all the weight imbalance issues. It's a nice drive, if you can deal with the facts that you will be 10-15 mph under the limit the entire way and that there will be a Monroe County sheriff's deputy parked every 20 feet or so.

Got married in the keys...love that drive. Advice on taking it easy through the towns is a good one, that's how they generate revenue down there. Rent the convertible, drive in your swim trunks. You'll want to make some stops along the way. When you get to the seven mile, no where for cops to hide...open her up (assuming you rented a mustang or corvette). about the only place you can do that. Have fun.

I've done the drive to Key West from Islamorada (about 1/3 of the way down between Miami and KW) a couple of times. It's beautiful, but be mindful of speed limits and oncoming cars. Also be aware that, if there's an accident somewhere along your path, there is exactly one road in and one road out. Best to find a roadside bar, drink beer with the bikers, and wait it out.

In Islamorada, the Islamorada Fish Company makes some good lunch food (even though it's a chain - get any of their fish sandwiches for maximum nom-nom-nom) and the Lazy Days is great for dinner, especially if you bring in your own fish. Many times we've gorged on 5+ lbs. of blackened and/or fried just-caught-by-us dolphin fish and/or grouper.

Dammit! Now I want to go fishing and eat myself stupid.

Definitely one of the best drives in the U.S. Thought I'd prefer to do it on the old highway or take the train but I'm about 70years too late for that...

I was stationed in Key West way back when. Did the 7 mile bridge many a time but its really discomforting driving it at night.
